INTRODUCTION
All of the photographs in this
PHOTO
ARCHIVE have been taken in
Isabella County,
Michigan. Some of the photographs are displayed
directly below this introduction. Others can be seen by clicking
the names of the birds on the tabulated lists that follow
the directly
displayed
images. The directly displayed photographs include
birds that are
rare or unusal within the county, birds of certain groups (e.g., the
ducks,
raptors, and
sparrows), photographs that seem especially worthy of widespread
viewing, . . ., and a
bit of “whimsy." The
photographs that can be seen by clicking the names of the birds listed
along the margins of the main archive and those on
the tabulated group include birds that are relatively common
within the county, additional photographs of some of the birds whose
images are in
the directly
displayed group, . . ., and a few less than
good photographs that serve as records for the presence of relatively
rare or unusual birds when they were in the
county.
It seems noteworthy that the
following photographs include
the Henslow's Sparrow, which
is "Endangered";
the Red-shouldered
Hawk, Merlin, Common Gallinule (formerly Moorhen), Yellow-throated
warbler and
Louisiana Waterthrush, which are "Threatened";
and
the American Bittern, Bald Eagle, Northern
Goshawk, Wilson's
Phalarope,
Grasshopper Sparrow and Dickcissel, which are of "Special
Concern" according to the designations on the Michigan Natural Feature
Inventory ( April 9, 2009 -- http://mnfi.anr.msu.edu/data/specialanimals.cfm -- web site citation updated February,
2014
). Each
of these
birds is protected
under the
Endangered Species Act of the State of Michigan (Part 365 of PA 451,
1994 Michigan Natural Resources and
Environmental Protection Act).
The directly displayed photographs are in
the order in
which the pictured species appear on the American Ornithologist's Union
(A.O.U.) Check-list of North American Birds (7th edition). Most
of these photographs are
cropped versions of the originals that were sent to me by the indicated
photographers. None
-- so
far as I know -- has been
retouched. Only three of the included photographs -- the two by
Myles McNally of
the
rufous hummingbird and the one that includes the whooping crane by Stan
Lilley, which I requested for inclusion
in this archive --
were previously published elsewhere.
(- Unfortunately, when I was
soliciting
permission from the
photographers while
preparing this archive for downloading to CONDOR, I found that my
presumption about no previous
publication to be
untrue -- i.e., some of the photographs that were then on this website
had been
previously published
elsewhere. Had
I known that to be the case at the time, those photographs would either
have
not been
included on this website or, if included, would have included citations
of the original publications in their captions. I was/am
distraught about this and apologize to the publications involved, my
colleagues, and anyone who viewed the Archive with the
photographs for which appropriate citations were not given. In
any case, those
photographs have been deleted -- i.e., they are not included in the
version of
this website that is on CONDOR, and they are no longer on this website.
-)
This
archive will be
updated continually. Those who take photographs of birds
within
Isabella County are invited to submit them to me for future inclusion
on the website.

[ This photograph, which includes the house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) on the left, was originally included in the
tabulated group. It was taken
after my wife of more than 60 years passed away
and before the time I began spending
much of my time away from our Mt. Pleasant home
there -- most places where I no longer saw of these
birds.
Consequently, I moved to
the main Archive, where I would see the titmouse fairly often.
The photograph and caption directly below it are as they appeared while
included as one of the tabulated entries.]
